When Members Move: Turning Address Changes into a Member Retention Strategy

A change of address may look like a routine database update, but it can also signal the beginning of member disengagement. For associations built around chapters, regions, or in-person participation, relocation can quietly disrupt the relationships and local connections that sustain membership.

Drawing on data and lessons from the Masons of California, Jordan Yelinek, CMP, CAE, will show how associations can treat member mobility as a predictable retention risk—and an opportunity to reconnect. Attendees will explore practical, low-cost ways to identify relocated members, reduce barriers to participation, facilitate warm introductions, and measure whether their organization is successfully maintaining connections when members move.

Participants will:

• Identify address changes and geographic relocation as early indicators of potential member disengagement.
• Apply three practical interventions to reconnect relocated members with nearby chapters, affiliates, events, or peer communities.
• Select key measures for evaluating mobility-related retention, including renewal rates, time to local contact, and post-move participation.

Jordan Yelinek has been a leader in the world of learning and development, event programming, and membership for over twenty years, in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors. In 2015, he joined the Masons of California and leads the member services, lodge services and events teams of the organization.

His passion for freemasonry and its members is rooted in his belief that freemasonry can have a positive impact on an individual and the surrounding community.
